Many companies are successfully “Advertising Locally”, even in this gloomy economy that we are in and the reason they are thriving is because they have customers.  We all know that we need customers to survive in business, but, do we know where the customers are to be found?

How people find information

The way people are finding information is changing, they are now using their computer and their mobile phone to help them solve everyday problems. However, business owners have been slow to see the change.

You can see this when you search the internet. I have found that small business owners have not yet grasped the fact, that when advertising locally, that their business should be displayed on the internet where it can be seen by the people who are searching for this information, it’s the best way to attract business.

You need some skills

The work involved in getting your company seen on the internet is quite technical and a great deal of skill is involved, even when it is only local advertising, and most small business owners are not willing to go through the learning process that is necessary to master these skills.

Unfortunately they have also lost faith in the people who they trusted in the past to do the work for them and now believe that the internet is out of their reach.

The work of getting your business up on the internet is very skilled, and it involves two different kinds of skills.

The first skill is designing the web site and posting the information on web pages so that people can read it.  This is the least skilled part of the job, however, it’s the only part that is visible and makes sense and it’s the part that is being sold to the small business owner as the way it should be done.

The second skill is the invisible, or at least a less obvious part of the website.

To understand the second skill you would need to understand how a search engine works, and that’s why most people don’t bother with this part. Search engines search the internet for information that people are looking for and then present it to them.

To understand the concerns of the search engine you should try to imagine the vast amount of information they need to sift through so that they can find the most relevant parts to serve to the searcher.

Give the search engine the right information

If the information they serve up is inaccurate the searcher will stop using them and get their information somewhere else.

The second skill helps you to understand how a search engine decides which parts of the information it finds as most relevant. When you know this, you automatically know how to design the web site and the pages on it so that you can advertise your business locally. Most web sites on the internet today were designed by people who did not have the second skill.

Google and the other search engines will list your pages when you are advertising locally, but only if they find them relevant. Making a page relevant is not like rocket science, but it is very important to understand if you want your local business to be found as relevant by the search engines.
