Advertising Online and Local Search

Advertising online and local search for business owners

Keyword secrets, what are they?

When advertising online the skill of understanding how the major search engines identify pages that are relevant to a search query and building a web page based on this is called search engine optimisation (SEO). Advertising online offer the most cost effective business leads for local businesses and in most cases search engine optimisation delivers better results than other forms of online advertising such as e-mail and pay per click advertising or banner ads.

Understanding keywords and advertising online .

Keywords, also known as key phrases, are the words that people type into the search box of their favourite search engine when they are searching the Internet for information. It's important to know that people searching the web will not find your advertising online if you don't use the same Keywords as they use in their search. When you advertise online use the name of your town or county to make your page more relevant to the area where you do business

It's very important to have a good knowledge of the keywords a person is using in the search engine's home page text box when you are advertising online. Your web page must contain the same words that the searcher is using. Ask your customers which words they would use to find your business on the internet.

The secret of writing articles

I'll use the word “Article” as an example of a search word because I think that writing articles is the best way to advertising online and find customers and I would like to encourage you to write some articles about your local business. Articles are the key to the internet and must be used by any business owner that is serious about advertising online. You will hear more about articles later, the search engines love them. Have a look at what happened when I wrote a simple article about “how to write an article” that fits in with my book on “how to write a web page” and “how to make money with Pay Per Click Advertising”.

I would never use general words like “article" to optimise my web page, because the competition to reach the top page takes too much time and money to beat there are 342,000,000 listings for the word “ article on the Yahoo w ith the word "article" and I would be competing against every newspaper on the planet. I have optimised my web page for what I have to offer, which in this case is a small book that I writen on "how to write an article" or "how to write an article for your business” and these are the words I have optimised the page for because it's much easier to get listed, and it will also find customers that are looking for my service as opposed to people who are just browsing the web for information.

If you look at the top right, of the Yahoo search page, you can see how many web pages are using the same keywords.

Web pages in the Yahoo UK listing

Advertising Locally

I needed to have "advertising locally" at the top of the major search engines for an online advert so I optimised my main pages for the words.

Link to advertising locally.

In Yahoo I got:- 1 - 10 of about 3,950,000 for advertising locally page one position 1

In MSN I got:- 1-10 of 6,170,000 results I'm on page one at position 1-2-3 and 4

In Google I got:- Results 1 - 10 of about 177,000 for advertising locally page one position 1

Optimising a web page when you are advertising online is simply a matter of placing the keywords onto the web page for the search engine spider to find. However, it is very important that we place the keyword in the correct part of the page, in the correct quantity, and format the keywords correctly.

Having done this we will have a chance of reaching the first page, especially for a local advertising online. Each page of the search listing has only ten positions available and provided you are not using any of the single keywords like "article" or “networking” or "advertising", you can get onto the page quite easily, especially if you are a small business owner who only wants to reach people in your local town or county advertising online.

The first secret of advertising online and web page optimisation is:

Position your key phrases on the web page where the search engines love to find them, or the page will not show up on the first page of the search engines listings when you are advertising online.

Where do the search engine spiders look for your online advert key phrases?

•  Use your key phrase as your domain name for advertising online, if possible

•  Use your key phrase in your page title tag <title>painting and decorating Middlesex</title>

•  Use your key phrase in your page description tag

•  Use your key phrase in the keywords tag

•  Use your key phrase in your headings h1, h2 etc.

•  Use your key phrase in the Alt tags

•  Use your key phrase in any links you have to your page

•  Use your key phrase at the beginning of the first paragraph of your body text

•  Use your key phrase throughout the body text - about 6 to 9 times for a page that has between 300 and 400 words on it.

•  Format one or two instances of your key phrase with “bold” in the body text, don't overdo this.

•  Use your key phrase near the end of the last paragraph of your body text

•  Use your key phrase in the copyright area

Do all of the above and your online advertisement will be on the top of the search engine listings, provided you are aiming at a local search market like your town or county and not trying to win the world or the whole of your country. Do just some of them and you will still have a good chance of winning the battle of advertising online.

If you wanted to get to the top of the UK or the World, the other thing you would need to do is get other important pages to link to your page. Provided the pages linking to you were from web sites that the search engine trusts, they would increase your ranking quite a lot.

Therefore, if you have the right key phrase for a local search and you place them on your web page as we have listed above, and you have trusted sites linking to you, you would be among the best-optimised pages advertising online.
