Why you might need “Google Places”.
Generally speaking, Yell.com is still the place to go if you are looking for a plumber, dentist or any other
trade or profession in your local area who are advertising locally. However, Google, Yahoo and Bing are working
very hard to profit from a new trend in consumer habits. In these articles we will be discussing “Google Places”
but Local on Yahoo and Bing are almost the same.
Internet access is the norm today and this makes it very easy to go to the computer and make a search rather
than looking in a paper directory. People trust the search engines now, and will ask them through their search box
to find them what they want; this is easier than going to a web directory first and then starting to search.
Now that Google is promoting “Google Places” and giving the results a prime position on the search listing,
people will start to use them as a way to find local businesses who are advertising locally. Have a look at the
“Google Places” web page and you will notice that Local search has the best position on the
page, and it is actually pushing the normal search results down and off the page.
Who will win from this new method of advertising locally?
As far as I can see the main winners are the people who use the search engines to find local services and
products that advertise locally. Local is becoming a big issue because the search engines believe that people would
rather find local companies from their own neighbourhood when they are searching, and I must agree that it seems
very logical.
Who else will win?
Local business owners who want to use the internet, when advertising locally, now have the chance to push the
big national local directories down off the first page and away from the searchers view. But it will not be as easy
as it appears, all the rules of getting a good normal web page listing still apply and this means that the local
business owner with some knowledge of the search engine rules, or one that knows someone who can help, will be
among the seven lucky businesses on that elusive first page successfully advertising locally.

business.
